The word umbrella derives from the Latin word "umbra," meaning shade or shadow. "The collapsible and internally supported umbrella is commonly credited as being invented during Cao Wei in ancient China, roughly 1,700 years ago." "Captain James Cook, in one of his voyages, saw some of the natives of the South Pacific Islands, with umbrellas made of palm-leaves."
Today, umbrellas are used by individual to protect them from the heat of the sun and also the elements, wind, rain, snow and sleet. In countries where monsoon conditions exist, the umbrellas is an essential item in their everyday life. The umbrellas used currently have many features that traditional umbrellas lack. For example, there are now umbrellas that are designed so that they do not invert in very windy conditions. The term "vented" is associated with this type of umbrella. Vented umbrellas have two canopies, one over the other. This design "vents" allow wind to escape through openings where one canopy overlaps the other. This prevents it from blowing inside out during gusty conditions. |

In addition to the double canopy, the ribs of vented umbrellas are made of fiberglas. It the umbrella does turn inside out, it can be snapped back into place and will still be usable. If the ribs of the umbrella were made of metal. it would be totally destroyed if turned inside out.
Vented umbrellas are available in the following umbrella types, golf, folding, mini, stick, fashion, beach, market and patio. Because of their unique construction, compared to other umbrella types, vented umbrellas are normally more expensive.
